That, for all they care, i can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast

Volume Five, Chapter Eighty-Five
“What’s wrong with it? If a person with high-class tastes like Dômeki wants to eat your cooking so much…”
”Is that supposed to be high-class taste?”
”If you consider the liquor brings with him and his likes and dislikes with regard to food, yes. Not to mention the gifts he brings. It’s all proof that he eats nothing that isn’t well-made.”
”Now that you mention it… Haruka-san said something similar.”
”What did he say?”
”That Dômeki wouldn’t eat anything he couldn’t feel certain of. At first, I thought he was talking about Dômeki being a fussy eater, but…”
”That isn’t it. He cannot see himself eating any food he doesn’t believe in.”
”Eh?”
”Eating is something that is extremely important… Brings extreme joy and can be an extremely frightening experience.”
”Dearest Cecilia, the story can resume. The one I had been planning on that evening walk. I can become again the man who once walked across a Surrey park at dusk in my best suit, swaggering on the promise of life; the man who, with the clarity of passion, made love to you in the library. The story can resume. I will return. Find you, love you, marry you, and live without shame.”
